If you’re an Xfinity customer, you may have experienced a blinking green light on your xFi gateway before. The blinking green light on these gateways is more-or-less normal, but if it keeps going, and you have a lack of internet, then obviously there’s something deeper going on here.
A green light on an Xfinity xFi Gateway indicates the gateway does have an upstream connection and is registering with the service provider. The light should stop flashing after ~2 minutes. If it doesn’t, try power cycling your gateway and then hard-resetting it before contacting Xfinity support.
So, what if this doesn’t just magically fix itself? There are several troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the issue. What Causes Xfinity Modem Blinking Green Lights?
Xfinity modems like the classic xFi Gateway (from Xfinity) are known for their reliability and speed, but sometimes, users may encounter an issue where the modem’s LED light is blinking green. To be clear, the LED has multiple colors, and some users encounter fail states related to a white, blue, or even orange light, but for today we’re focusing on what to do when you encounter a green one, starting with why this happens.
The reason the router blinks green is that the router has booted up and is establishing a downstream connection with the service provider. You may also see the green light flashing along with an orange one when the unit is downloading a software update from Xfinity, but, of course, if your light is only green, that’s not your issue. It’s most likely just the router doing it’s normal pairing process.
But what if it won’t stop? The router is great, but it isn’t perfect. It could glitch or experience some run-of-the-mill hangup during registration–or worse, there may be nothing to register with if the ISP is having an outage or someone has plowed through an underground fiber optic cable or something.

How to Fix An Xfinity Modem With A Blinking Green
First, try a soft reset by powering off your modem and unplugging it from the electrical outlet. Wait for 30 seconds before plugging it back in and powering it on. This should clear any temporary glitches and connectivity issues.
If the blinking green light persists, you may need to perform a hard reset. This will reset your modem to its default factory settings, which means you’ll need to set up your network from scratch again. However, you can use the Xfinity app (iOS or Androd) to streamline this process.
Here are the steps to perform a hard reset on your Xfinity modem:
- Locate the WPS button on the back of your modem.
- Press and hold the WPS button for at least 30 seconds.
- Wait for the modem to restart.
- Once the modem has restarted, set up your network from scratch using the Xfinity app.
If the blinking green light continues after performing a hard reset, the situation is almost certainly now something out of your control. An ISP outage, a mysterious fault in the router–the remaining causes are going to be things you are better off not spending your time and effort diving into (at least in our opinion). Further Troubleshooting + Contacting Xfinity Support
If the soft and hard reset methods we discussed earlier do not fix the blinking green light issue on your Xfinity modem, then it’s time to contact Xfinity support. While some other sources may suggest checking for damaged cables or router overheating, we can tell you flat out that, from our experience, these are exotic problems that not many people face in general, and they aren’t the type of errors that fail into a flashing green light here at all.

So, now we know that, while the Xfinity blinking green light can be a puzzling sight for many home theater enthusiasts, it’s often just a sign of your device communicating or updating.
